Wave Tube
This highly interactive exhibit visually demonstrates how sound travels in waves and shows the effects of variations in frequency and amplitude. As sine waves are generated, sound is graphically represented in foam beads as they align themselves with the associated sound's waveform. This stimulating display consists of a sturdy eight inch diameter acrylic tube partially filled with extremely small Styrofoam beads. On one end of the tube is a speaker connected to an amplifier and variable frequency generator.

The exhibit is activated by an illuminated push-button and runs for a preset amount of time. While in operation, visitors have control of both the frequency and amplitude by manipulating levers on the exhibit's control panel. We can also integrate a microphone allowing your visitors the opportunity to excite the beads with their voice! Please contact Science Kinetics so that we can work with you in customizing a Wave Tube for your facility!

Scientific concepts include:

  • Sound waves
  • Standing waves
  • Frequency
  • Amplitude
  • Energy

Jacob's Ladder
This spectacular display is both visually stimulating and educational. Based on a 12,000 volt transformer, our Jacob's Ladder produces an arc of plasma that climbs between a pair of 42" metal rods. An emphasis on safety has been integrated in several areas. High voltage cables, on-board circuit breaker, secure casing and heavy insulating materials where necessary as well as an emergency shut-off function that activates if the exhibit should tilt or be knocked over.

Our Jacob's Ladder can be safely designed to run for a preset amount of time when a visitor presses an illuminated push-button or can be turned on/off via a foot switch for use in a show or demonstration. Your choice of on/off control is available for an additional charge.

Scientific concepts include:

  • Electrical resistance
  • Air density
  • Ionization
  • Plasma
  • Current and voltage

Stroboscopic Effect Display
This dramatic exhibit consists of a stream of water, a rotating blade and a variable rate strobe light. Visitors have control over the strobe rate as well as the rotating blade speed. An illuminated push-button starts the exhibit which will run for a predetermined amount of time. When viewed with a strobe light, it is revealed that a stream of water actually consists of individual drops. The rotating blades which are nothing but a blur when viewed in constant light appear motionless or can even be made to seemingly rotate backward when the visitor manipulates the controls. This fascinating display is also available in rotating blade or water only configurations.

Scientific concepts include:

  • Stroboscopic effect
  • Surface tension
  • Persistence of vision

Virtual Strings
An array of invisible "strings" provide your visitors with an opportunity to generate musical sounds out of thin air! The "strings" on this exhibit are actually safe and reliable infrared beams. Breaking one or more of these beams will trigger sounds that are reproduced on the exhibit's speakers. These sounds can be musical notes or sound effects.

As with all exhibits produced by Science Kinetics, our Virtual Strings exhibit can be completely customized to meet your specific requirements. Variables include number of strings, type of sounds, and physical structure of exhibit. We can even integrate "strings" into a doorway or an opening in a wall! Please contact Science Kinetics for more information.

Scientific concepts include:

  • Infrared waves
  • The electromagnetic spectrum
  • Sound wave frequency (musical scales)

Induction Ring Launcher
Unlike other ring launchers, our version is designed to operate on a current of just 10 amps, yet repels an aluminum ring to a height of 15 feet or a spectacular 25+ feet with the use of liquid nitrogen! We can customize a ring launcher for you that will repel a ring to a predetermined height to match the ceiling height of the area in which the exhibit is to be placed. To prevent our Ring Launcher from overheating, a timer is used to put the coil into a ten second cooling period after each launch. This is communicated to the visitor by the illumination of a "Please Wait" light. After this cooling period is over, the "Please Wait" light shuts off and the illuminated "Launch" push-button turns back on. As in all of our exhibits, our ring launcher uses only solid state electronics for its control circuits, so there are no moving parts to wear out.

Scientific concepts include:

  • Induction
  • Eddy currents
  • Lenz's law
  • Electromagnetism

Hyperbolic Funnel

Your visitors will become fascinated watching their coins circle around this large 62" diameter hyperbolic funnel! Constructed of highly polished, industrial strength fiberglass, this funnel is manufactured to exacting specifications by the HyperTek Company. The funnel's surface is carefully calibrated to insure maximum performance and is available in a variety of colors. Included with this profitable exhibit are two coin launchers, a secure coin drawer that holds about $436 in coins and a plaque with a scientific explanation. Custom bases are available as well as two other funnel sizes.

Viscosity Tubes
This durable exhibit consists of 24" tall acrylic cylinders securely mounted on a rotating platform. Each cylinder contains a liquid that has a viscosity unlike the others. When a visitor rotates the exhibit, a ball falls within each cylinder at a rate determined by the associated liquid's viscosity. This exhibit is available either with or without a base cabinet.

Scientific concepts include:

  • Viscosity
  • Density
  • Gravity
  • Fluid dynamics

Energy Efficient Lighting
Through the use of thermometers with digital readouts this exhibit clearly demonstrates why compact florescent lights (cfls) are an energy efficient alternative to the traditional incandescent light bulb. While the initial cost of a cfl bulb may be higher, in operation, it will generate much less heat than an incandescent bulb while outputting an equivalent amount of light. This results in much less energy consumption. Additionally, cfl's offer a significantly longer life making them the clear choice for educated consumers. Our display is also available with light meters that display brightness in addition to the temperature readouts.

Scientific concepts include:

  • Energy efficiency
  • Energy transformations
  • Energy forms
  • Environmental science
